"During 1836 trade and commerce in Chins was better than It had been for some years previously, and though one swallow.. does not make a summer,' there is every reason to anticipate that the 'depression that has engulfed China in common with other countries, for so long is passing and that the future may be regarded with greater confidence than has been possil- ble for some few years," said Mr. R. Calder. Marshall, presiding at the 22nd annual general meeting of the British Chamber of Commerce held at the Chamber's offices 27 The Bund.

WORLD SUGARTM CONFERENCE

Agreement Still Undecided

London, Apr. 19.

The World Sugar Conference will know before the end of the week whether or not an agreement is possible with respect to the division of the free market.

To-day'a meeting between the heads of delegations and the nego- tiating committee was quiet and without excitement, and the com- mittee's report was received with- out comment. The conference then adjourned until to-mOITOW evening.

This year, the report has been issued in two parts, Part 1 being the report itself, and 2 a new volume entitled "Trade by Countries" which, in spite of its bulk (1004 pages) should meet with a very favourable reception. Duchess Wields Wallace Sword

The Duke of Choucester, who was accompanied by the Duchess of Gloucester, opened the "Daily Mail" Ideal Home Exhibition in Olympla..

Under the guidance of the Hon. Esmond Harmsworth and Sir George Button, they spent close on an hour and a half in a tour of the principal sections.

The Earl of Derby was among those who joined the Royal party.

Their Royal Highnesses first saw the Golden Hall of Homage." The underlying idea of the decorations of this section is to depict, on great triezes, & Coronation cavalcade of the British Empire. The hall is overlooked at one end by a statue of the King, modelled by Sir Wi- iam Reid Dick, RA.

Near this was a cake having on it a model in icing of the liner Queen Mary. Beside it lay a giant sword that had belonged to Sir William Wallace. When asked if' she would like to cut the cake with this, the Duchess expressed a doubt about her ability to handle it. With the help of an assistant she cut into the cake.

The Wallace sword is one of a collection of historical relics from Scotland. Some have been lent by the Earl of Strathmore, the Queen's father, and the Duke of Buccleuch, the Duchess's brother.

TONGUE-TWISTER RECORD The Duke of Gloucester spent some time in examining a model of the bridge of the Queen Mary. In 1933, the figure for 1936 being $1,547 million, Mr. Calder Marshall welcomed the surplus of visible exports over imports shown in Jan./Feb. 1937.
