In these days of aerial warfare, tl those others résident in Hong to attempt to gain impregnability Kong, and who possess sumclent without such civil preparation is leisure-realise that the times are comparable to sending a stout box of gold through d criminal area with its lid off. What has this to do with ambulance service? Much; for without adequate strengta of ambulance men and women scat- Lered about the threatened ares and-by their presence giving con- fidence to a terrified people-this be cannot civil impregnability secured.

Fortunately both your Govern- ment and those responsible for the protection of Hong Kong fully are the this: But such realise numbers of ambulance workers required in great who will be emergency-that it la a matter which demands the attention of all; It is, indeed, a time when many whose lives have been spent in less serious affairs should really face up to realities and realise that nelther vain bombast nor ostrich like policy does anything towards secure defence; while all, at least, At themselves for this by learning first aid. Do I think that war is coming?

can

#

If there is one characteristic feature about those I have met in Hong Kong it is common sense. How could any thinking man or wo- man know that the Empire is now spending almost a million pounds a day in an attempt to reach de- other for- fensive equality with midable powers; that the example for permanent peace which our Empire set has been mis-interpret ed by aggressive nations as proof of national decay, and read of the welter of blood in Spain, and its most dangerous mixture of nation- alities, without also realising tha every endeavour must be made to reach real defensive security rapidly as possible?

да

Doubtless there are some who become tired of this talk of am- bulance needs; of that type which prefers to treat everything in lile as a series of motion pictures, to interest for a moment and then give place to something new for a jaded palate. Unfortunately such ambulance, or even defensive needs, must quickly pall: To those who see things as they actually

to

are ambulance work can be thril- ling:

As regards the efficiency of the ambulance which I have seen, and the magnificent work being done "John Ambulance Brigade, I can have nothing but the warmest praise.
