Bright Oxford Prospects For The Boat Race

Two Crews Now Doing Hard Work

OXFORD SEEM TO BE MEETING WITH FEWER DIFFICUL- TIES THAN CAMBRIDGE IN BUILDING UP THEIR CREW FOR TAKES PLACE ON THE UNIVERSITY BOAT RACE, WHICH WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS SUGGEST THAT THE OXFORD PRESIDENT. J. S. LEWES. HAS PRACTI- OF HIS CREW CALLY DECIDED ON THE COMPOSITION WRITES A HOME CORRESPONDENT.

.". Since work began at the beginning of the month. two crews have been out every day, and there have been frequent inter- changes of personnel. "A" crew, is gradually becoming the stranger and it cannot be long before it is hailed as the Univer- sity Eight. "B" crew is then likely to change its name to Isla, and if present plans are followed, will stay in training to take part in the Head of the River Race on the Tideway.

Incidentally, owing to tidal difficulties, no date has been ar- ranged for this event. It is being suggested that the race may have to be rowed on a Sunday, and March 21 has been mention- ed as a possible date. But this will not, I think. meet with general approval, and it is to be hoped that a Saturday will be chosen as usual.

Race To Be Held On A Sunday?

The chief concern of the Oxford President at the moment must be the choice of a stroke: The like- ly men for this position are D. M. de R. Winser, A, B Hodgson, and J. W. Sturrock, all of whom have Unfor- had racing experience. tunately. Hodgson strained a mus- ele in his knee and may.net be able to row for some nie.

Nursing A Crew

Winsi stroked the boat last year, but was hardly a success. He 1s Idea for slogging a crew along in a bumping race and has done wonders, with his College, Corpus Christ. But I do not think there is quite enough. "devil" in his work for the University Boat Race. One cannot forget that in last years race when Oxford were leading length at Hammer- by nearly a smith, he allowed Cambridge on the outside of the bend to pass him a few strokes. making to hold practically no attempt them..

Hodgson, though brought up to at Eton. has strict arthodoxy quickly assimilated the new style

and of

imparts real rowing rhythm into his stroking. He zeems to understand the art of nursing a crew without allowing the work to become ragged or slovenly,

Sturrock has. of course, had Arst-class experience when he

stroked the London four which. gained second place at the Olym- ale Games. With that crew hel learned a good deal about swivel rowing. But it seems to me that Sturrock is the ideal man for six. and it will, I think. be a pity if he is taken from that position. My opinion, is that "Hodgson is the man to fill the stroke thwart.

apart from the fact that the uum- ber of the entries for both the singles and doubles exceed those received last year, it is interesting to note that all the Colong's lead- ing lights will be participating. Altogether 82 people have entered for the singles competition while the doubles have attracted - 38 couples, the higures for last" year being 52 and 32 respectively.

The game produced hockey which was not of a high standard and no goals were registered up to the interval.
