Christmas Appeal

To Women Of

Hong Kong

With all its time-hallowed joy, Christmas brings for all of us at same time a breath of sadness, In all homes there will be, sooner or later, the empty chair.

But it is a gentle grief when the missing face is of one who has lived a life, has seen his or her children grow to ripe years and has shared the Christmas joy with those children's children. Such have won through to an earned reet.

of

"

The empty chair, yes! But what the empty cradle! Some of our readers will have known friends stricken with the bewildering grief a dead child, medical, skili powerless, the end not preventible. There is no greater sadness than the loss of a child's life when all that can be done to save it has been done.

..

There is no sterner tragedy than when this happens without need. here is no tercer Indictment of a community than that this may happen not rarely, not as a sudden visitation, but 18 à matter of course and without need,

The social charity of Eastern Lands is known.

We are told that none who have struggled through Infancy need starve where others have food. Usage will find rice for them.

But the soild foods within the reach of the poverty-stricken, un- employed or beggar parents are for the infant equivalent to death sentence of the servitude of n maimed life.

You who read these lines may wonder that such things can be.

Canton something be done? Yes. easily, and you can do it. When the mothers, through lack of nourishing food, cannot feed their tables naturally there is help waiting for them.
