SECOND TEST

MATCH

Good Start By England

HAMMOND SCORES

147 NOT OUT

Sydney, Dec. 18. England made a good start in the Second Test Match against "Australia' which commenced to- day. At close of play the score was 279 for three wickets, towards which Walter Hammond contri- buted an unfinished 147.

Fine summer weather favoured the day's play. The attendance was 35,107 and the rate receipts

£3,386.

Allen, England's captain,' won the toss and this will be an ad- vantage if the wicket crumbles after a few days as it is expected to do. England's team was the eame as in the First Test except that Sims replaced Worthington. On the Australian side O'Brien was included as twelfth man in place of Robinson,

Fagg and Barnett opened the faced innings for England and

some fercy bowling from Mc- Cormick. One or these bit FarE in the cheek, and later Barnett was struck. in the knee. Fagg's career ended when he aliced orte of the

Hammond Joined Barnett and the 50 was hoisted on the board in. 53 minutes, Barnett having scored 34 and Hammond 10. They brought the score to 100 at lunch time. Barnett indulged in spark- Eng cutting and driving, reaching his 50 in 89 minutes, and for a time he overshadowed Hammond, who however, took no risks.

BARNETT DISMISSED When the

118, score reached Barnett, who had scored 57, played. on to his "wicket off Ward, He was at the wickets for 107 minutes and hit five boundaries. The partner- ship lasted 78 minutes....

Hammond executed some artistic strokes, in reaching his 50 in 94 minutes and he went on to make the three-figure score in 162 min- ules with eleven boundaries.

Leyland, who has filled the gap. played with extreme caution at first and reached 30 at tea time, the total being 209 for 2.

The score reached 247 when the third wicket fell, Leyland being 1.b.w. to McCabe after scoring 42. Ele batted stubbornly, but was not so confident as usual.
