FIRST LORD ON NEW WARSHIPS
"Very Different From The Old”
16 DESIGNS BEFORE FINAL DECISION
Britain's new battleships will be very different from the old." said Sir Samuel Hoare, First Lord of the Admiralty, in a broadcast talk on "Sea Power" recently.
He revealed that 16 different de- aigns were worked out in detall before the Admiralty was satisfied with, the new ships.
14
We do not worship big ships." added Sir Samuel. "Indeed, we did our utmost to reduce by interna- tional agreement the size of bat- tleships. We do not want a ship a single ton bigger than is necessary for the purpose for which the ship is to be used.
The design of a ship of war has always beers adifficult problem. Within a small space and on 日 floating body you have to hold the balance between the power of at- tack and the power of defence, be- tween the armament and the arm- our. between the fighting qualities of the ship and its speed and capa- city to keep the sea.
"
"These problem have never been more complex than they are at present. Difficult. however, 13 they are, there is no reason, to sup- 1 pose that they are insoluble and that, being insoluble; sea-power has been shorn of its influence in the world."

the. principles of sea-power and conclude that, while new problems have undoubtedly been created and finality can never be resched in the struggle between the at- tack and the defence, there is no reason to change 'our historic at- eltude to the sea, or our confidence In the Fleet as the arm upon which we depend for our food, our raw materials and our Imperial söll- darity
"There is no antithesis between the ses and the air, for the sea needs the air and the air needs the sea. The aeroplane is not able to operate in the wide oceans, but it can operate, with great effect in the narrow seas, the naval Bases and the civil harbours. A system, therefore, of the closest, co-opera- tion must be worked out between the Navy and the Air Force for ensuring the greatest practicable. |
