Johnston Denies Knowledge Of Contents Of Parcel
JUDGMENT THIS MORNING
On the second day's hearing on the alleged smurting and possession of a parcel of opium on board the S.S. Cheun Chow on November 11, James Johnston, Chler Oficer, denied any know- ledge of the contents of the parcel, when he appeared before Mr. Keen at the Centraj Magistracy.
The accused said that the parcel, together with a large sult- case, was given him by Ah Kwok, a building contractor of Macao to be delivered to Mr. Chester Bennett.
Mr. M. J. Abbott, Assistant Crown Solleitor, appeared for the prosecution. and Mr. J. D'Almada Remedios represented the defendant.

The charges against "defendan: were: (a) importing 72 taels of raw oplum on the 8.9. Chuen Chow, (b) possession of 72 taels or oplum. (c) importing 18 taels "of prepared opium on the 8.8. Chuen Chow, and (d) possession of 18 taels of prepared opium.

He said that he had been on the China coast for over twenty years, and that it was a common pccurrence for the ship's officers to carry parcels for friends.
