COMPLICATED SITUATION

While. In general, the results of the government's suppression of Mlicit traffe in oplum was fairly satisfactory during the year, the situation, according to the report, was complicated by many causes. In the first place, it is funda- mentally difficult to bring all the producing areas, which are widely scattered... under effective control. Secondly, the producers have many ways to conceal their pro- duce or even to sell to unscrupu- lous merchants for the manufac ture of narcotics. SMUGGLING METHODS With regard to the methods of "Emuggling the report states that the most common mediums are: parcel post, railway employees officers and crew on steamers, native junks and secret ways of concealment on persons. Smug- gling generally follows threa routes: (1) from the territories north of the Great Wall into the provinces of North China by way of Pelping and Tientsin; (2) from Shanghai into the interior; and 13) from the province of Szechwan eastward along the Yangtze River into the densely populated cities and towns in the central part of 'China. Oplum and narcotic drugs smuggled from abroad generally came through Dairen" for North China; through Amoy for South China: and through Shanghal for Central China.

The inquest into the death of Fang Luk. 28. who was shot by the detective C 274 Lau Wan, ön October 11, was concluded Mr. E Himsworth, sitting as Coroner at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday afternoon.
