NOVEMBER 11th
Yesterday And To-Day
.il
There ran a quiver. through the softened glade: The squirrels paused to leap from bough to tree: Forgot the very joy of being free,
And, quak ig, stood silent in the shade While from the sylvan depths Pan, piping, played With glittering notes a warbling ecstacy Of stark defiance to whate'er might be, And, playing, the last god began to fade.
While over Bethlehem a shining star, Ginided to a lowly manger shorn
Of comfort, where an humble pair did bide, Three wise men from Eastern lands afar. 'Twas in that hour the infant Christ was born, While Pan, in distant woods, still piping, died.
In the blushed cagerness of youth they went
To fight for what? They said, "But, this shall be
A war to end war; therefore. battle we Our hearts towards this noble purpose bent.” The burtling guns their bodies racked and rent: They fought and died, the Dove of Peace to free, To succour and to save humanity; «
Stopped, writhing in the mud, their brief life spent.
And now to-day memorials boast our pride
In those who died for us, yet all-in vain! Though there are carved the words, "Lest we forget," These voices seem to say, "Although we died The war clouds gather gloomy once again. It seems Man has not learnt bis lesson yet.”
