HONG KONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1936.

LONDON SILVER

MARKET

London, Oct. 29 The strength of the London sil- ver market, which to-day advanc- ed a further 1/18 to 20-3/18 per ounce, is attributed almost entire- ly to the cessation of sales from China and Hong Kong,

Brokers point out that the as- tainment of the highest price since May 20, 1936, is due to the reserve of sellers rather than any Inclination to buy. Consequently the small daily purchases from India are quite sufficient to cause a steady appreciation in price.

Some quarters report increased speculative interest based on the beller that the United States. In an effort to prevent any substan- tial appreciation of dollarS In terms of sterling, will engage in more active sliver purchases. But the majority are inclined to doubt thyks occurrence in view of the steadiness of the dollar, with the result that no large bull account of silver exists nor is it anticipat- cd. Beuter.

NOTICE TO CONSIGNEES

The Secretary of the Coal Mer- chant's Associtalon, described the situation as "revolutionary." 12.000 tons of coal are waiting at the station to be transported to the factorles concerned, while the canals are blocked with hundreds of barges, carrying 40,000, tons of coal.

Од Thurday the Government took a decisive step by sending Mobile Guards to protect trucks of factories, which were taking delivery of the coal themselves.

Serious clashes occurred with the strikers, when a crowd of about 200 tried to prevent the passage of

the trucks. They were finally dispersed by the Guards- Transocean News Service.
