Dr. Schacht States German Policy

Dr. Schacht, President of the Reichsbank, made it clear recently that the German Government is nor contemplating any devaluation of the mark, states the Berlin Correspondent of the "Daily Tele- graph."

The announcement was made in a declaration to the centralcom- the Reichsbank. Dr. mittee of Schacht added that he sympathis- ed with the aims expressed in the declarations issued by the British. Amèrican Govern- French and ments Germany, would do her best to contribute towards their tulfilmen

He welcomed the statement that It was the policy of the three Po- wers to "maintain the greatest possible equilibrium in the system of international exchanges," but could not help remarking that this had been disturbed by the British and American devaluations, The German Government would support all efforts to abolish "the present system of quotas and ex- change control."

STABILITY THE AIM "Although," Dr. Schacht con- tinued." "we do not belleve in the success of such Isorated moves. Germany bas no intention of sacrificing or upsetting the mea- sures which the French Govern ment thought it necessary to take. "The Relch Government and the Reichsbank have come to the con→→ clusion that we should not add to the insecurity of International trade, which is being increased by devaluation abroad, by ourselves contributing to its uncertainty.

"I do not wish to exaggerate the importance of the arguments put forward in favour of devaluation By interested parties in Germany by criticising them detail. I merely wish to say, on behalf of Germany, that the system of for- eign exchange control, the disad- vantages of which we have al- be ways recognised, eald not made superfluous simply by deval- uation.
