STRATHROY SETS NEW RECORD

Brillant weather coupled with good racing featured the Seventh Extra Race Meeting of the Hong Kong Jockey Club which was held on Saturday. The sunny weather attracted a good attendance, which witnessed three major upsets during the case the dividend returned paying afternoon's sport, in every more than $100 for the fortunate punters.

The first surprise came in second race of the day when 5. C. Liang pilotted Harvest View first past the post. It paid $112.50. Surprise No. 2 was provided by the Gorilla (H. C. Pih) which paid $108.50. The last race of the day saw Norman Deltz, after rid- ing many seconds, bring la The Hero to pay $100.39.

A fresh record was established by Strathroy (B. A. Proulx) in the Corroboree Handicap for Australian horses over five fur- jongs, when it returned the time of 1.02.2/5. The previous record stood in the name of Able Amazon at 1.82.3/5.

His Excellency the Governor, Bir Andrew Caldecott, accom- panied by Lady Caldecott, and attended by Capt. W. J. R. Cragr.. A.D.C.. were present at the meeting.

race of the autumn The first season saw Ave white ponies face the starter. The favourite, Sel- dier of Britain got off to a bad etart with Diana Bay and Oak Bay. in front. King's Warden was left at the post. This order was maintained till the straight when Soldier of Britain came forward leaving Oak Bay some two lengths behind. "King's. Warden after its bad start, came up strongly but could not make up löst ground, It was beaten into third place by Oak Bay, Soldier of Britain win- ding comfortably. Oak Bay paid $18.10 for a place.

ISLAND BAY HANDICAP (FIRST SECTION)

The six furlongs race attracted A full held (15 starters), Harvest View got off into an early lead with Laughing Girl at his heels and

Boolat Bay next. Two ponies were left sadly at the post. ∙Coming into the straight Harvest View was still in the lead with King's Scep- tre a length in the rear. Royal Consort came up with A strong burst to displace King's Sceptre in the last 100 yards. Harvest View could not be overtaken despite a gallant effort, and anatched first place half a length in the lead. Royal Consort had the public's confidence. Harvest View paid $112,50 for a win!

strongly with Night View on its heels. They finished in that order and not many lengths from the winning post 17th of September "pipped" Wadebridge for third place. The Gorilla paid $108.50 for ù win.

VAUCLUSE HANDICAP Atlas sprang into the lead follow- ed by the Ranger. At the Rock, Ranger displaced the leader with Honey challenging strongly round the curve. Up the straight Ranger came up from a good position to take the lead. Honey fell rapidly to lay away for Violet Queen second Opposite the stands Cen- tre Court finished strongly to annex second place with Violet Queen third. Ranger paid his backers well

ISLAND BAY-HANDICAP In the second leg of the "Daily Double" the ponies got on to a good start with Royal Highness in the lead,

followed closely by Tyne. Up the final stretch Yihan came up strongly with Amberley and Tyne next respectively. In the last 100 yards Tyne could not stave off Rose Evelyn's challenge and was displaced for third place. CLEAR WATER BAY HANDICAP The half mile sprint saw 11 of the 13 entrants face the starter. a fast Popular Star got of to start with Herlot close behind. Up the straight Shamrock came through with Heriot on her heels and Laughing Buddha challenging gamely. Near the winning post Laughing Buddha made a grand effort but lost to Shamrock by a short head. $85.30 was paid for a win,

JUNK BAY HANDICAP (SECOND-SECTION)

A betting the occasion, the final race provided a keen struggle. The Herp lead it the outset from Gold Coin, with Ocean View and Double Chance in close attendance. Up the incline Burgomaster went into 3rd place. Valley View came into the picture temporarily in the straight but The Hero was too far in the lead to be overtaken. Double Chance now came up with Gold Coin and challenged the leader strongly. The latter was just stared off by The Hero, who paid Its backers the handsome dividend

The three horses were well backed. TWEED ISLAND BAY HANDICAP Four "King's" ponies, owned by three different owners took the field of 9 starters the first long race of the day. The field got off of $100.30. to a remarkably fine start. At the 5 furlong post King's Fancy lead King's Justice. Cyclamen Bay and Astake Bay in that order. Rose Queen kaproved her place and Iny second coming into the home stretch. Bear Claw challenged but was blocked."Mr. Davies made an- other effort opposite the stands to get clear and managed to steer bls mount a neck in front of Rose Queen Mistake Bay won by a length.

JUNK BAY HANDICAP The first teg of the Daily: Double" attracted, 13 starters.. After much, shuming the ponies got away to a good start with Sylvandale and Young Chap neck to neck in front, past the stands the first time round. Wadebridge came into the lead at the half mile boat, with Bylvandale second. Going up the slope Zero lay third with Gold Sovereign-next.
