The story, directed by w. s. Van Dyke and produced by Bernard Hyman and John Emerson, is the story of the Barbary Coast of thir- ty years ago, opening or пету Year's Eve. 1908, and continuing through one of the most disastrous dramas of the century, the Francisco earthquake and fire,

Szn

Perhaps the greatest surprise of the picture, however, is the strik ingly different portrayal of Tracy who abandons, his usual tough roles to contribute a sinde portrait of the priest, Father Mullin.

"LET'S SING. AGAIN”

The unfortunate course on which one child is sent by the separation of his parents is treated with ap- pealing effect in "Let's Sing Again," a drama now "showing at the Queen, Theatre.

The subject of "Let's Sing Again” is Billy, an eight-year-old boy gift- ed with a beautiful voice, confined in an orphanage, after his mother deserted her poor but aspiring hus- band, a singer. Choked with a de- sire for freedom to express his en- dowed gut of voice. Billy flees the orphanage, and charms A tent show handyman, an erstwhile opera singer in sponsoring him.

Billy's voice la developed by his guardian and the two come to New York for an audition. They wend their way to the home of a famous concert singer whose guest of honour chances to be Blily's father, now a renowed baritone. Through the medium of a song the father used to sing to his son in the cra- die, the pair are reunited in heart gripping denouement,

Billy is portrayed by Bobby Breen in "Let's Bing Again" the debut vehicle for this child marvel. Henry Armetta and George Houston head the featured cast in this R.K.O. Radio release.

HIS TENTH BRIDE

And Yet He Despises "Modern Courting" Methods"

Would you blame a little boy for taking one stick of candy from a beautiful box-fil if you left him alone in a room with such temptation?" is the pointed question which May Robson, as Clark Gable's screen mother, asks of Myrna Loy as his screen wife. concerning an incident which occurs between Jean Harlow, the secretary, and Clark Gable, the big advertising expert, in an "eternal triangle" production entitled "Wife Versus Secretary" at the Majestic Theatre,

psychological phase which might occur in any man's life.

That question, so mercilessly ask- portray ed, is the key-nate of this slender theme which is overburdened with a particularly Are cast of star players:

But Jean Harlow, who looks more like a gold-digger" than ever. turns out to be such a good girl: Gable such a good; hard worker. and Myrna Loy such an adaptable wife, that this great problem is simply and deftly solved in a Smother of kisses,

There is much in the production which attracts, and a great deal which undoubtedly bores, but the fact remains that Clark Qable is alven more opportunities for what the Americans term "hecking in this play than in any other in which this modern screen Bon Juan has yet appeared. LIFE OF GREAT IMPRESARIO

Florenz Ziegfeld

11-

Recently, at His Majesty's Thea- tre.. talkie-equipped for the first time. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer velled the 'r, £300.000 three-hour film dealing with the life of the ate Florenz Ziezfeld, greatest and most spectacular Impresario the world of theatre has ever known.

When M.-G.-M. decided to make this picture. a' frantic search was instituted for the writer best atted to convey the real-life glamour of Zegfeld to the screen.

.

The choice eventually fell on a wilter-scenarist carrying the homely name of Willam Anthony McGuire. No better selection could have been made, for not only is McGu're an expert and experien- ced scenarist. but back in the old days he supplied Ziegfeld with some of his greatest stage successes. Of course, he knew Zlegield in- timately all h's strengths, alf his talings, his virtues, his bad points.

Principal among. Z'egfeld's idiosyn-crasics was a fascination for sending telegrams when a post- card, a phone call, or even a con- versation would have served more efficiently to convey the message.

There are a hundred störles about Ziegfeld, but the best of all is told by McGuire himself, be- cause dé figured in it. "At a time when my office and Ziegfeld's were separated by only a small yard, I received along wire from him con-- taining instructions on a show I had in hand. Thinking that be was away out of town, I repiled by night letter.

a

"In the morning the yelled ac russ the yard. 'Did you get my wire?" I shouted back explaining that I had telegraphed a reply overnight.

"At that moment the wire was nanded to him. He read it, and shouted across to me, 'No, no, Bill. you don't get the idea. Don't go

out. Ti wire you back."

"He did, and I stil have that telegram."

Maybe such stories just go to prove that Florenz Ziegfeld was a fool. Yet among his strengths was the knack of devising entertain. ment that was the envy of the

world."

He created the Ziegfeld Folles, and glorified the world's loveliest girls He recruted beauty from the fringes of the earth-blonde, brunette, black, brown, belge. He gave America and Europe such shows as "Kid. Boots," "Whoopee (starring Edde Cantor, who after- wards made screen versions of both)"The Three Musketeers," to "Bally," "Show Boat," and so on.
