A cadet in 1899, and it spe- cializing in gunnery was awarded the Egerton Prize. During the War he served as first and gunnery offeer in I.M.S. Prince of Wales. in which he took part in the Dar danelles landing, and later FL.M.S. Royal Sovereign, in the Grand Fleet, where he was serving when prouoted to commander in 1918. He afterwards joined the Department of the Chief Inspector of Naval Ordnance.

An expression of their Lordships Appreciation has been conveyed to Lieutenant J. Bownsa-Manifold. R... H.M.S. Courageous, for the useful information he has suppliet and the care he has taken in com piling three remark books for 1835 while serving as navigating officer Senior H. M. S. Shoreham, Officer's ship in the Persian Gulf. Lientenant Bowman-Manifold took four "firsts" in passing for lieutenant in 1831, and is an inter. preter in French.
