Berlin, August 10. A new Olympic record was set up in the eliminating contests for the 800 metres relay in the men's swimming on Monday.. when the Japanese team beat their own record of 8 mins. 58.4 secs. made in Los Angeles in 1932 by the new time of 8 mins. 56.1 secs.

Other teams which qualified for the final on Tuesday were France, winner of the first heat in "9 mins, 21.7 secs. Canada 9 mins. 20 secs.. U.S.A. winners of the second heat in 9 mins. 10.4 secs., Hungary 9 mins. 20.8 secs.. Germany 9 mins. 21.4 secs. Bri- tain 3 mins, 30.8 secs., and Sweden 3 mins. 35.3 secs,
