CANADIAN PILGRIMS IN LONDON
Visit To Cenotaph And
The Abbey
MOVING ADDRESS BY THE PREMIER
Help In Moment Of
Britain's Peril
London, July 29.
To-day 8000 Canadian Pilgrims who were present at the Vimy Ridge ceremony on Sunday paid visits to Westminster Hill, Cenotaph and the Abbey and later to-day are being receiv ed in the gardens of Buckingham Palace by the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester on behalf of the King. There was a moving service at the Cenotaph and at the Abbey. An old lady of 15. rs. Wood, whose twelve sons fought in the war, taid a wreath on the tomb of the Unknown Warrior.
From the steps of Westminster Hall the Prime Minister, Mr. Stanley Baldwin spoke to the pilgrims. During his remarks he said: "We in Britain can never forget how in those first days of the war and at that moment of perfì you in Canada leaped to our side. You stood with us in that grim fight round Ypres and you faced that first"gas attack in. April twenty one years ago. We showed you then what we thought of you." We gave you Vimy, the key spot of the whole line and We gave you moreover of our best--we gaye you Julian Byng and you loved him as I know he loved you.?"
FUTILITY OF WAR
A
The Premier also paid a tribute to General Curric, himself Canadian, who took over from General Byng. The Prime Minis- ter recalled his own visit to the war graves in France-to the con- sciousness that they must have had of being watched by an un- seen crowd of witnesses.
"If the dead could come back to life." he said, "there would be no war. They would never let the younger generation taste they did.".
what
He concluded: "If Europe and the world can find no other way of settling their disputes than the way of war now-When We are still finding and burying the bodies of those who "fell twenty „years ago—if they can and no other way, the world deserves to Derish"
