CATHEDRAL SERMON

The Ministry Of Women

The following sermon was delivered by the Rev H. W. Baines at the Cathedral yesterday morning:

"Jesus saith unto her Mary. She turned herself and saith unto Him Rabonni which is to say Master."

To Mary was given the honour of being the first witness of the risen Christ. Yet she is the last to have been admitted by "our Church to a place of honour among the saints whose feast we observe It was not till the Calendar was being revised in 1923 in prepara- tion for the deposited Prayer Book of 1927 that Mary Magalene's name found a place among the Red Let- ter

Saints" Days. I don't know why this singular discrimination should have been made and why for so many years the Mother of our Lord should have been the only woman to have been honoured by our Church for her relation to Him. Not including St. Michael there are sixteen men whose sanctity we honour and

that Mary Magdalene has been included there are" but two women, a proportion which hardly agrees with the num-- bers in the ranks of those who have served Christ in the years be- tween.

CHURCH BUILDER'S TASK It has been left to church builders and to those who were 1 looking for a dedication vividly descriptive of the Church's service of mer to bring back the name of Mary Magdalene to the prominance Whose that it surely deserves. name could better keep a congre- gation in mind alike of the de- yotion which it must show to God by the beauty of impassioned, de- dication and the service that it must render to men? She had been known as Mary of the Seven Devila: a woman distraught, the plaything of uncounted diabolical agencies. But at some gulden me ment which the evangelists have not preserved for us Mary bad met the humble carpenter of Nazareth and when they looked on each other, her soul escaped from its legion contestants and rose from its charnel-house to greet the

women are described. But I like to think of Mary Magdalene as the chief because the humblest repre- sentative of all' that band women who "when He was in Galilee ministered unto Him" and that we should recognise and honour the service which they paid to our Lord. In the honour that we give to Mary. In Mary let us be proud to remember the power of Jesus' perfect love which won back from a Uving death a woman deeply sunk in depravity and the quality of His understanding which was much deeper for erring women timid than that of their usual and exacting male judges; and in Mary let us delight in the wild beauty of the extravagant gift of the vase of ointment very costly.
