Grand Challenge Match

R. W. F. & EAST LANCS. BOYS. R. U. R. BOYS

The combined team of East Lancs, and R, W. F. Buys met the R, U. R. Boys at the Hankow Bar- racks on Thursday after- noon. There was a large crowd present as it was generally known that the undefeated record of the R.U.R. Boy was at stake," as their opponents were a very hefty side in compari- son to them.

The teams lined up as follows: East Lancs. and R.W.F. Boya Grimths (R.W.F.), Pritchard's (R.W.F. Walsh (E. Lane.. Naish loir E. Lant., Taylor (R.W.F), Davies (R.W.F.), Gregory (R.W.F.).

Sexton (E Wheeler R.WE Lane, Laroiner (E. Lanc.), Stone

R.W.F.).

R.V.R. Boys-Tindall, Birneil Edwards. Ingoll, Allen,

Parker, Turton. Alwood, Lewis, Godney, Swinfield.

Lewis kicked off against a fair breeze, and it was hot long before his forwards tested Griffiths, but The Belded well. There was a good deal or long kicking as this stage,

free kick against the homesters brought danger towards Griffiths and frem Allen's placing he had to look lively to get t out of the Lewis led his line danger zone.

well and, in sustained pressure he had hard luck when his shot just grazed the upright with Griffiths out of position. So far it was all R.U.R. pressure but Tayler relieved It at last and sent his forwards away on the right per Gregory and Wheeler but the latter missed when well placed.

proving himself a tower of strength for the visitors and on more than one occasion he had his forward going great guns only to see bad finishing ruin their chances. Walsh was proving himself a rare defender for the home side and time and again he frustrated all their attempts by keen tackling and kicking. Now came the Orst real thrill of the game when Godney get possession in his own half and went away on a solo run, outwitted the home de- fence and finished with a wonder- ful drive which gave Griffiths no chance.

ed Lewis in a heading duel he fastened on to a pass of Allen's flashed it out to Stone who in turn sent over to the opposite wing, and Wheeler cleverly taking the ball on the run obtained the equalser, Tindall making a gallant attempt to grip it but it proved futile.

Lewis in recentreing, the ball tapped it to Godney who deli- berately wormed his way through the homesters' deferice to give his his side the lead, not one of the homesters touched the ball since it was centred till it 'rested in the -net.

This great feat on the visitors part seemed to inspire them and only the great work of Walsh pre- vented a further score.

A WEAKNESS

There was a noted weakness in the homesters halves and though their tackling was good their plac- ing was inaccurate, as their for- wards had to roam a lot to obtain the ball. From a long" clearance of Pritchard's, Sexton got posses- sion and cleverly beating Allen, he sent out to Stone who shot hard and Tindall had to fully extend himself to push it round the post for a corner, which resulted in a scrimmage, Gregory finally putting it past.

R.U.R. were now at this stage dominating play and pressure was bound to get good results, as after Lewis and Godney had co-operated in a "James and Bastin movement" Godney want on to obtain his third goal and hat-trick.

The next item of interest was a fine plece of constructive work Df Allen's and his wonderful ground pass to Lewis who abot hard and true, only to see Griffiths bring off a marvellous save.

Gregory got away on the right and sent to Wheeler who in turn
