Charges Made In A False Coin Case

VISIT TO TAIPO

Allegations that a man and a woman had gone to Taipo from Wanchai to pass counterfeit coins because there was less likelihood of the country folk detecting them were made in the Criminal Court yesterday.

The allegations were contained in the opening address of the Assistant Crown Solicitor (Mr M. J Abbott) in prosecuting Leung Kwa-sul and Li Yin. a woman, on four charges of possessing and uttering counterfeit coins,

For the Crown cuse to succeed. said Mr. Abbott to the jury, it was necessary to prove gulity know ledge, and he submitted that the Crown could do that there were several significant facts regarding the shopping expedition the two accused had made to Taipo Market on April 16,

UNEMPLOYED ON A SERIOUS CHARGE

PROCURING GIRL FOR PROSTITUTION

-ગ્

Allegations that an 18 year-old- wall was reduced in Chatham Road and then hired out to Europeans, were made at the Kowloon Magistracy yesterday, when Lau Hun, 39, unemployed, stood before Mr. Q. A. A. Mac- fadyen charged with procuring Chan Tea Mui, of No. 12 Che » Woo Street, for prostitution.

Inspector E. J. Els of the S.C.A.

who prosecuted, said that the girl alleged she was a virgin before the

accused seduced her.

An additional charge or har- bouring was also levied against La Accused strenuously denied both charges. "I have never seen tlus girl before." he said.

that

Inspector Ells explained the girl's parents were dead and that she lived with her grand parents. On the night of June 12 the girl absented herself and sald that she wished to visit her sister in Tai Nam Street. While return- ing to her grand parents' house the next day, Lau came up and asked the girl to accompany him for a walk in Chatham Road. The expedition

where he seduced and deflowered hatched to pass the counterfeit her. He then took her to Chung money, declared Mr. Abbott, for Lo Street where she remained. the couple ved at Wanchai 2.5 On the 16th and again on the man and wife, went to Talpo and 17th the defendant was said to purchased D. variety or sinali bave introduced two Europeans articles at various stores,

to the girl.

Was a

scheme

A significant tact was that in no case did the purchases exceed two cents, except where the accus- ed had bought food, and in that case two cents worth of food would be hardly sufficient to satisfy their hunger.

THE ARREST

On the night of the 19th while returning home. Lau again ap- preached her and attempted to entice ber away... The girl'a: brother saw what transpired and had the accused arrested.

Evidence by the girl was given in hushed tones and with fre quent long intervals. She' sald that when she accompanied the accused to Chatham Road, it was late at night. He took her to 2 "pavillon" in a garden where she was assaulted.

GUILTY BEHAVIOUI“ "Another significant pont 13 that at one shop both accused made twu visits," declared Mr. Abbott. "On each visit they ten- dered a counterfeit con for "goods worth not more than two cents and received change. If they had been behaving innocently. why should not one or the other of them have made the four pur-when the girt felt overcome with chases at one time? Conduct like embarrassment, the Magistrate ad- that is more consistent with guilt than with innocence.

The case was held in camera. Following an awkward pause

dressing her in kindly tone, said that although he sympathised with, her, at the same time he had. to insist in the interests of justice, that everything that took place must be given in her evidence.

NOT GUILTY

Mr. Abbott contended that the small value” 01 the purchases showed that the accused did not really want them all they wanted to do was to rid themselves of the bad coins and get as much good money in change as possible.

When arrested, said Mr. Abbott. the mau sald

the woman had given him the coins and the wo- mau declared she did not knowing her stay in Chung Lok Street, they were counterfeit,

After lengthy evidence. Inspec- tor Ellis said that the girl's tale differed in many respects to the statement she made to the S.C.A. Questioned by the Bench regard-

wished. She was not forced TA stay there.

the girl admitted that she could Mr. Abbott said that although leave the house whenever she the man was charged with posses- ston of eight counterfet 10-cent. the Crown would not present evidence on that count, Pleas of not guilty were enterca

by the accused on all counts.

The following Jury ww. em- panelled: Messrs. W. C. Felshow (foreman), J. S. Smith I. J. S Glendinning. J. R. Canning. V. M. Barradas, Len Tat-shi and K. W Pedersen

The Jury returned a verdict of not guilty on the possession charge ind a verdict of guilty on the uttering charges.

The Chief Justice (Sir Atholl MacGregor)" imposed a sentence of a year with hard labour on each .of the accused.

Ruling that there Was not sufficient evidence of procuring and harbouring, the Magistrate discharged the accused. There seemed to be some doubt on this point, and the accused was en. titled to benefit by it.
