THE STORY OF LOUIS PASTEUR
AT THE QUEEN'S
In "The story of Louis Pasteur" now showing at the Queen's -Theatre, Paul Muni is given ย character role that is extremely difficult. yet he excels and shows quite definitely that he is one of the few actors in Hollywood who can claim to be able to hide his own identity in the character he is performing.
The flm attempts to authenti- cally portray the He.o Pasteur and opens with the physician leading. á campaign against the danger of infection through negül- gence, and carelessness of medical men. But being a chemist and not a fully fledged physician at the time, he is branded as a char- latan and retires to the provinces where he continue with his ex- STORYperiments and discovers a vaccine

His experiments with sheep that are vaccinnated (and do not die are interesting, and are one of the highlights of the film.
Gradually Pasteur broadeps the scope of his field and includes dogs in his experiments. The supreme test for his new discovery comes when he attempts to save the life of a boy bitten by a rabid dog.
The film appropriately enough, closes with his acclaimation by the scientific leaders of the world. A large cast"ably supports Munļ, and includes Josephine Rutchison as his wife. Donald Wood and Anita Louise provide the love in- terest.
Louis Pasteur, the man who has done a great deal for man-kind, his life and his trials, have been accurately portrayed, and the film has lost nothing for its historical accuracy.-"Redincam".
"LOVE ON A BET"
Gene Raymond conclusively proves his versatility in his latest characterization in "Love on a Bet," a romantic comedy-adven- ture showing at the Alhambra Theatre to-day. '.
Since he deserted the New York footlights for a picture career, Raymond has practically covered the range of emotions. One of his Arst portrayals, to attract wide- spread attention was that of the condemned youth in "If I Had A Million," "Flying Down To - "Rio"

Minority Issue Tension
"Modern Times," Charlie Chaplin's new comedy, which begins a 3 day engagement at the Star Theatre to-day, marks the nearest the comedian has ever come to letting his voice be heard on the screen. The scene. in which Charlie performs a hilarious pantomime Hoar Kong Daily Press" Special
to the music of "Tuina," is the Arst sequence in a Chaplin film to be shot directly in sound.
Although no publicity had been given the novelty, the day after the scere was shot the rumour got about that Charlie had bowed to the "talkies" and sung a song in "Modern Times," This, of course, was not the case. What Chaplin had done was simply to inter- polate, in his own "musical lan- guage," "words" to fit the gestures, and the scene is said to be one of the comedy high points of the
