Been More Versatile
The return of cottons to fashion Importance must count among its causes the invention of techniques for shrinkage control, particularly the most adequate of these, san- forizing: the improvements in colour-fastness; the new ways of maintaining yarns and weaves that result in crush-resistant textures and permanent finishes: and the handsome styling of fabrics both as to weave and design.
In this article cottons and linens wil be considered as falling into one, classification,
Fashion shows two trends in these fabrics, one for heavy goods in shaggy, nubby, crinkled, bilater- ed, waffled, corded, puffed, tüfted, spongy, matelasse and homespun surfaces; the other for soft sheers, In which, however, the same ideas are expressed but in very delicate and dainty weaves.
Among the heavy materials, sult- able for tailoring, are suit, coat and dress fabrics of the upholstery and, bedspread types, such novelty piques, bamboo liners, glazed chintz, chevrons, seer- -suckers. Other attractive selections. can be made in crashes, shantungs, homespuns, brushed cottons, chambray and gingham. This spring, however, ginghamhs are a staple rather than a style factor.
Sheers include among various weaves, crepes, ratines, swiss and other musins, dimity, batiste, volle, chiffon, net and lace.
» The season is exuberant with design and colour, so that in almost every goods definite patterning can be had, superimposed, often in re- iler, on the background texture, which itself is patterned by some novelty weave, The decoration in colour, particularly for daytime wear, takes the form of set Ögures. floral or geometric. Dots of various shapes and tiny squares are very popular and sometimes look as if they were pasted on, as is the case in one of our illustrations. Spraw- ling ribbon and bowknot motile are attractive on crashes, nautical emblems on piques, astronomical symbols on glazed chintzes for evening frocks.
EFFECT OF HANDWORK
Sheer cottons are fond of open- work, which has frequently the ef- feet of handcraft. Hemstitching. cut-work and eyelet embroidery en- hance
some of them and others merely present an ppen weave as a background for colour printing. SUITS COATS AND DRESSES
New this year in cottons are the" severely tailored suits, meticulous in workmanship. They show straight skirts with kick pleats and detailed seaming; single and dou- ble-breasted jackets, some
