London, May 7. The second volume of Mr. Duff Cooper's biography (Faber and Faber, price 25s) starts from the conclusion of the battle of the Somme and carries us through the grim days of Passchendaele and the great German offen. sives to the final victory.

Mr. Duff Cooper has haturally devoted much space to defending Lord Haig's memory against Mr. Lloyd George's attacks, but he suc- ceeds in presenting a vivid picture of the course of the campaign and of the man himself.
