Man Who Brought About The Single Command

BY MAJOR-GEN. A. C. TEMPERLEY “Dally Telegraph” Military Correspondent

London, May 7. The second volume of Mr. Duff Cooper's biography (Faber and Faber, price 25s) starts from the conclusion of the battle of the Somme and carries us through the grim days of Passchendaele and the great German offen. sives to the final victory.

Mr. Duff Cooper has haturally devoted much space to defending Lord Haig's memory against Mr. Lloyd George's attacks, but he suc- ceeds in presenting a vivid picture of the course of the campaign and of the man himself.

THE CALAIS CONFERENCE

The book opens with the extra- ordinary story of the Calais Con- ference, where Mr. Loyd George, by some obscure manoeuvring with M. Brand, endeavoured to super- Mcde the Commander-in-Chief in The Case of The Curious at but name and place the British,

For a breathless ninety minutes the screen fairly throbs with scenes ot romance, of adventure, of spectacular magnitude that make this picture a towering giant of en- tertainment.

The story is famillar to every reader of the works of Charles Dickens. It comes to the screen without major alterations,
