WEST RIVER FLOODS

Lowlying Suburbs Inundated

(From Our Special Correspondent)

Canton, May 21. Summer floods have made their appearance along the West River and inundated the lowlying suburbs in Wuchow and Fatahan, as heavy rain on the upper, reaches of the River in Kwangsi are responsible for the rapid rise of the water level.

||

The water at Wuchow is running so swiftly that many small boats are unable to navigate the main stream. The county Government has designed severa hilly suburbs as places of shelter for the refugees, stated the Centon Dasty Bun to- day:

Several streets in Fatshan, 20 miles west of Canton, were under one foot of water yesterday after noon as a result of a heavy rain and squall. A cargo boat on the River was overturned, but fortun- ately the three boatmen were able to swim aahore..

Floodgates along the towng and villages abutting on the West River are, shut tight against the rising water level.

Farmers generally welcome the rain for their crops, the last two "months having been comparatively dry. If the present rainfall is mo derate, the crops will come out well in the coming harvest.
