Attitude Of Moderation Urged On Statesmen

The relatively calm atmosphere in which the League Counçil proceedings took place is attributed by Geneva correspondents of Paris papers to the effort of M. Paul Boncour, who is stated to have strongly advised the statesmen whom he met previous to the opening of the session, especially Baron Aloist, to adopt an attitude of moderation.

The papers, however, declare that the danger of a serious conflict with lia'y has yet been definitely averted since the Counell has invited the Abyssinian delegate to take part in the debate and unanimously decided to leave the · Abyssinian question on the agenda, thereby emphasising that the Italian Government's action does not constitute, for the Council, a satle- factory solution of the matter.

APPEAL BY NEGUS

Geneva, May 12. The Negus sent a telegram to the Secretary General of the League of Nations, asking him to bring to the knowledge of the members of the League, that, in order to end the most unjust and cruel war of modern times, and to save the Abyssinian people from being" annihilated, be had decided to leave the country, and was de- voting himself to the preservation of a thousand years old indepent dence, the principles of collective security and the sacredness of in- ternational treaties, all of which were threatened by Italy."

From the very beginning the Negus had made every exertion to prevent a disturbance of peace. The Negus further said, that he had defended his soll honestly till the moment when gas showered down, and it was clear that the résistance could not be continued, ar at the end would have no other result than the eradication of the Abyssinian people.

The Negus new demands that the League of Nations continues its efforts to enforce respect for the League of Nations Covenant, and not to permit any expansion of territory by illegal use of force.- Traasucran News Server,
