"The King of Italy to-day assumes the title of Emperor of Abyssinia and all territories and peoples of Abyssinia are placed under the full and unrestricted sovereignty of Italy". These mu- mentous decisions regarding the fate of Ethiopia were announ- ced by Signor Benito Mussolini to the Italian nation from the balcony of the Palazzo Venezia on Saturday evening.
The bursts of spontaneous enthusiasm which followed the proclamation of Abyssinia's "Incorporation in the new Roman "Im- perium" were simply indescribable. The deafening cheers of the immense crowd which had been patiently waiting for many hours" in front of 'Duce's official "residence, for a long time prevented Signor Mussolini from continuler his address.
Similar scenes were witnessed everywhere throughout Italy where practically the entire population had assembled in tional "roll call" to hear Il Duce's eagerly expected pronounce- ment which proclaimed the annexation of Abyssinia with following words:
