AN INCREASE NOTED

A report issued by the Statistical Office of the Imports and Exports Department on the trade of the Colony during the first quarter of 1936 states that the combined declared values of Im- ports and exports of merchandise amounted to $174.2 millions (11.2 milions), as compared with $172.1 millions (15.9 mil- lions) in the corresponding period of 1935, representing an in- crease in terms of Hong Kong currency of 1.2 per cent, and a decrease in terms of Sterling of 29.6 per cent.

SLIGHT DECREASE IN MARCH

Imports totalled $38.2 millions (£6.3 millions), as compared with $97.3 millions (£9.0 millions), a dollar increase of 0.9 per cert. wälist exports totalled $76.0 millions (£40 millions), as compared with $74.8 millions (£6.9 mlions), a dollar increase of 1.6 per cent.

During the year ended March 31, 1938. Imports of merchan- dise amounted to $365.0 millions (£32.7 millions). as compared with $417.4 millions (£33.5 millions) in the year ended March 31, 1935: a decrease in terms of local currency of 12.3 per cent, and aderease of 2.4 per cent. in sterling. Exports of merchandise to- talled $272,2 millions (£24.1 millions), as compared with $322.4 millions £25.9 millions): 3 decrease of 15.6 per cent. in terms of local currency and a decrease of 6.9 per cent. in sterling.

STATISTICS

Statistics for the first quarter of 1936 show that, as com- pared with the corresponding period of 1935, the shares of Japan, Netherlands East Indies. Жесп competition with close finishes were witnessed at the an- nual athletle meeting of the Wah Fan College, Kowloon Branch, which' was held yesterday on the Kowloon Football Club ground, In weather that at first was decidedly un- favourable but which cleared up considerably later.

Cheung Kwok Hot ran very well indeed to annex the Senior Chal- lenge Cup, presented by the Staff: While Pun Yau- Hoi and Lung Man Hol, are to be congratulated in tring for the Junior Challenge Cup. White House were vastly superior and won the Challenge Shle.d.

At the conclusion of a successful reeting, Mr. L'm Hoy Lan (Pre- sident) thanked Mrs. Edwards, on behalf of the staff and pupils for so kindly consenting to distribute the prizes. The speaker expressed appreciation to Mr. Edwards för giving up so much of his time to be present, and said the school was doubly honoured by the presence of Mrs. Edwards.

Mr. Lim said that he also wished to thank the organisers for their splendid work. the donors of the cups for their contributions, and the Committee members of the Kowloon Football Club for the use oi their "Але and spacious grounds."

"BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME" While congratulating the win- ers, he also consoled those who were not successful, and reminded them "that it is better to have tried and ost, then never to hevC tried at all" (Applause).

Mrs. Edwards then presented the prizes to the 'successful competi- tors, following which Mrs. Edwards was the recipient of a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
