VEILED MYSTERY

IN DRESS

Lace, Net And Tulle

The greater freedom now per- misalble in the choice of colours has given vent to more varied mo des. The latest over-dresses, scar- ves of chiffon and net usually veil exotic colours and fabrics. This la a revival of the many phases of the old Victorian vogue for layers of transparent materials.

Dress shows stress this mode. The mannequin exhibits a beauti- ful garment, velled by means of cleverly arranged suggestions or tulle. The purchaser, however. may be faced with an expensive sartorial failure

It sounds discouraging to critic ise the allure of the vell, I have received letters from readers con- taining tales of whe relating to this particular subject. Unless a girl has an adequate allowance and can afford to consult leading dress specialists. she will find that she cannot indulge in all whims of the mode.

!

LAYERS OF TULLE

If deciding on a tulle creation concentrate first on a Arm fabric and becoming colour as a well-cut and Atted foundation to the tulle. All-white or a. very pale pink the best choice. Over it can br placed layers of fine tulle, fish-net or a fairly good wearing lace in black-and-pink, maize-brown

green.

Or

Black, too, is a sensible Town choice. The new black cire satins look well with a tulle or sequined over-dress.

The Chinese influence is pleas- ing. Glowing Eastern effects are made more becoming and practical by a veiling of chiffon or clouds of grey-silver, or dusty-gold gauze. I noticed a wonderful gold-embroid- ered gold and green fitted robe, with a toga of deep purple satin with the Chinese golden dragon encircling the waist.

The many new ways with waist- bands and sashes are interesting. The earlier fashions stressed the position of the high or low belt, The first long wool coats firmly fa- voured the high waist. Some re- dingotes resemble those of high- wayman fame. The upward move- ment is assisted by the wide shoul- der-line, enormous gauntlet cuts, cavalier frills and jabots, with the coat stitchery also carried high up. The waists follow the stitched lines of the square yoke.

It is the notion of Erik to set practically all his new shapes this way, and when brims shoot for-" ward and curl up at the sides they are distinguished from other shapes modelled in quaint terms, A chalk-white felt, for example, is smart with twin points of felt placed at the front of its crown and rising above a pencilled rib- bon line of black.

WOOLLENS FOR THE SPRING

Spring suits for town wear are for the most part of soft smooth woollen materials Angora is stil a favourite for morning dresses and coats. Other woollen mater~ tals have a slightly wiry texture which guarantees a trim appear- ence. A thin alpaca-ke fabric, which pleats, well, is for tailored street frocks with pique, linen, or brightly coloured accessories. These fine and easily handled fabrics should be in demand. There are also woollen shantungs, and coarse rustic wool and cotton mixtures Ike heavy linen. Broadcloth is for redingotes, swagger coals, and the brief boleros which are part of afternoon and dinner sults. With fox trimming broadcloth makes full-length evening. "coats and capes. Finely woven wool jersey. especially wilen it is black, may be for day and evening dresses,

SELF COLOURED TWEEDS Tweeds are mostly self-coloured, soft, and supple; many have small overcheck in pastel colours on a neutral ground. They now have a smooth finish, unlike the tweeds of last season.
