It is understood that the new vessel will have a length of about 560 feet (overall), a displacement of approximately 15,000 tons, and that the propelling machinery will consist of geared turbines,

She will be fitted with complete equipment for all types of repairs to submarines, and her facilities will include a foundry, turning and atting shops, a smithy, plum- ber's shop, torpedo shop, and an electrical department.

The construction of the vessel and her equipment will involve two years' employment for up- wards of 1.500 workers.

EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS Prospects of an early start to this contract will help to offset the decrease in employment which will follow the departure of the Queen Mary next week from the Clyde.

9,000- ton cruiser for the 1933 pro- gramme, was launched early this month, but it will take at least a Work rear's work to fit her out. was commenced recently at Cyde- bank on two "T" class destroyers. Messrs. John Brown and Co. are all supplying the machinery for those vessels and also the turbines and boilers for another cruiser.

The BI and Apcar steam ship "Sudhana" will leave "Amoy for this port to-day, and is due here She will leave Hong to-morrow, Kong for Singapore, Port Swetten- ham. Penang. Rangoon and. Cal- cutta on or about Saturday. 11th April, 1938, at 10.30 a.m.

The R.M.S. "Empress of Japan" left Vancouver for Hong Kong, via Honolulu, Japan ports and Shang- hal on the 4th Apri! (Saturday), 2.m She is due at Heng Kong on the 24th April (Friday), am. and due to leave for Manila

The R.M.S. "Empress of Asia" arrived at Vancouver on the 6th Apri (Monday) at 2/4 p.m; arid will leave Vancouver on the 18th April (Saturdas), a.m. She is due at Hong Kong the 7th May (Thursday), am. and leaves Hong Kong for Manila on the same evening.

(BY LONGSHOREMAN) During the 24 hours ended at

the 9.00 am. yesterday,

freight returns, received from the Harbour Office showed a fairly low toanage movement.

The total tonnage of general cargo carried by vessels to the 7,029 tona, with Colony was British steamers carrying 6,664 tona.

Through cargo for ports be- yund the Colony amounted to 4.484 tons, of which all were carried by British steamers.

Asiatic deck passengers entering into the Colony during the 24. hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday were 345.
