THE SHARE MARKET
Harriman's Weekly
Review
Saturday, Mar. 21, MSESTA, G, Harriman & Co's weekly share report and market review isqued at досп states:-
to-day
The Political situation was not. at all bright at the beginning of the week and had a
general dampening effect on market opera- tions consequently trading was somewhat sluggish and with the exception of offsetting for Settle- ment accounts, which is now out of the way, there was just a mild investment bustness passing- with however A decided türü for the better in the European situation the volume of trading at once began to increase and to- wards the close of the week buying orders were renewed in all sections of that market, but sellers were reluctant to deal at the low levels ruling and scrip was consequently not very plentiful, and it would appear that a con- siderable increase in prices must be forthcoming before holders with part with any reasonable quantity of shares. Investment counters held their own very wel and were in steady demand throughout. Wharves were in con- stant demand around $92, and Hongkong Lands were wanted at $29. Hongkong Trams were off colour and were sold down 10 $10.50. Star Ferries were quiet with shares obtainable, at $84. Hongkong Electrics were the me- dium of a.. considerable turnover at rates between $521 and $531. closing in demand at $52. Hong- kong Telephones (old) held per- sistent enquiries with business done up to $25.25 and further buyers at $25.10. Dairy Farms advanced with strong enquiries to $19.50 buyers (ex dividend of $1.00 Just paldy. Minor issues attract- ed more attention at these levels and Hotels changed hands in quantity at $4.10 cash and $4.20 May delivery. China Lights firmed up to $10.65 during the middle of the week but a large block uf
more
share were taken off the market yesterday at $10.50. Cements after being dormant firmed up to a buying rate of $7,90 cash and $8.20 May delivery at the close after having changed hands ot $7.25/80 earlier оп Providents (oid) were a wide market fluctuat- ing from $1.10 to $1.421 during the week closing in demand at $1.30. Mining shares continued to attract
attention however and a good business was done in Antamoks at 51.86/2.11 cash and $2.20 May, Baguio Gold had sales reported at 20/21 cents Benguet Exploration at 17 cents and United Paracales at 58 cents. Stering
stocks remained tin- changed with Hongkong Banks .n demand at $1555, and Unions around $550. The tone of the market at the close is very steady with rates in favour of buyers and more activity is anticipated after the Settlement, furthermore there fr no doubt, that, with a 'settled Europe and a public prepared kill the word 'depression' for all we know we may be entering a new era of prosperity and coupled with China's improving trade it appears to be only a matter of time.
