SEVERAL UNEXPECTED RESULTS AT THE VALLEY

PUNTERS HAVE A GOOD
DAY
The "off day" races on Saturday brought forth several un- expected results, the chief of which was the win of Mersey over the favourite Valurous in The Happy Valley Spring Handicap. Mr. Plh's mount, paid its 256 backers $50.90 each, the highest dividend of the day. Other dividends of note which were due to these "u31- expected results" were: $44.90 for a win on Public Hero No. 1, 328.44 on The Dunlin and $29.60 on Soldier of China,
The dividends on the whole were moderate, and consistent with the trend of betting.. Cash sweep figures were exceedingly high, the first prize in the last race yielded $2,947 The Daily Double proved to be a small affair-no less itian 384 panters were successful in backing Rose Evelyn in the second leg which pald $14 to each.
The day could rightly be classed as a "kiddies" day. The Jockey Club precincts were crowded by the little tots and all of them seemed to be getting a kick out of the surroundings. The ladies too were not far behind. More were seen of them than at the previous meetings. The attendance on the whole was higher than at the previous meetings.
The track was on the seft side. Good times were out of the question, but fans were treated to several very close finishes dur- ing the day. Once again riding honours were very evenly divided. A notable absentee was Mr. N, Deitz who was unable to participate due to a fractured finger received while training,
Heading the winning list of Jockeys, was Mr. C. Enezrnação who oblained two firsts and a second followed by Mr. H. C. Pih with two firsts and a third with Mr. S. Y. Liang and Mr. Les Frost each with a first and a second and Mr. D. S. Li with a first and three thirds. Mr. Leo Frost however was the Champion jockey of the meet having obtained 11 firsts, nine seconds and four thirds while next to him was Mr. F. Marshal with seven firsts, seven seconds and five thirds with Mr. C. Encarnacao third with his seven firsts, a second and two thirds.

THE NIL DESPERANDUM STAKES; of the field. Unicorn took third
(IST SECTION) Attendance was bigger than the fourth day with a good many ladies in thelf best frocks among the throng. The track appeared to be 2. a better state but inclined to be on the slippery side. With nine starters entered for the first race Gold Sovereign was made a hot favourite with Ocean View running à close second. Fidelity led follow- ed by Merry Jester and Strathalan. Ocean View came up to the first position at the half mife post and on the stretch Gold Sovereign came up but was unable to stay the pace. El another surprise was in store for the fans when Mr. "Encarnacaó ably piloted Public Hero No. 1 to a win with Ocean View second and Gold Sovereign third.
