RUSSIA HAS A SAY NEWS FROM THE

IN SHIPPING Monopoly Intended

The possibility of the Russian Government ultimately monopolis- ing all shipping services between' other countries and Russia, as sha had monopolised the control of Imports and exports, was discussed by Mr. Henry M. Cleminson, gen- an address to the Shipping, in eral manager of the Chamber of British Empire League in Londan recently.

Following the trade agreement with Russia in February, "1934, he Bald, Russia had increased her im- ports of goods, and; in certain trades to and from Russia, there appeared to have been an increase of British in the employment ships, but in the timber trade in the present year "there had been a serious displacement of British shipping. It appeared from cer- toin figures that whereas the ratio of British to Russian shipping was more than two to one in 1934, it was completely reversed in 1935. The steady and rapid growth of mercantile tonnage owned by the the Government, and Russian speeches by its leaders and repre- sentatives in and out of Russin, suggest that Russia is bent on in- creasing t still further, and per- baps ultimately monopolising all shipping services between other countries and Russia.

(BY LONGSHOREMAN), During the 24 hours ended at 9 a.m. yesterday, the freight returns. received from the Harbour 'Omes i show a fairly high tonnage move- ment, a large proportion of which being contributed by British ships.

The total tonnage of general cargo carried by vessels to the Colony was 8.443 tons, with British steamers carrying 1,773 tons.

Through cargo for porta be- yond the Colony amounted to 18,814 tons, of which 7,052 tong were carried by British steamers

Asiatic deck passengers entering into the Colony during the 24 hours ended at 9am. yesterday were 761, of which 829 were from British steamers
