Being aware of the large amount of mineral oil consumed in the country and the enormous adverse balance of trade incurred through. the import of this product, the Ministry of Industry is turning its attention to the exploitation of China's oll felds, which lle. In various parts of the country.

According to plans worked out by the Ministry," a capital of $11- 500,000 will be raised to exploit the oll Belda in Szechuan and north Shenzi. A total of 500 ull wells will be dug. In these two provinces. It is estimated that the annual out- put will'amount to at least 80,000,- 000 gallona.

Investigations reveal that ex- ploitation of off has already been undertaken in certain parts of the country, including Yexchang in Shens, Lungli in Kwelchaw, Yumen in Kansu, Talimuho in Sinklang, and Macming, and Tien- pel in Kwangtung. In the latter province alone, there are more than 200 native refineries: Of B total of about 600,000 gallons of mineral oil consumed monthly in the province, about two-thirds is produced by the native factories. BACK IN 1907 Exploitation of oil fields in China, dates back to 1907 when Governor Tsao Hung-Hsun pro- ̈posed the exploitation of the oll fields at Changshih, north Shens, which was sanctioned by an Im- perial edict. Four wells were sunk under the supervision of a Japa- nese mining engineer. Of these only one operated successfully, producing 10,000 cattles of oil dally, In course of time, however, its out- put dwindled. In 1929 a new well was dug to the north-east of the old one. This at first also produce about 10,000 cattles daily but the amount has dwindled gradually until the output is now only about 500 cattles daily.

According to expert opinion, this gradual diminishing of output is due to the congestion underground. The contlauous output of the oil well at Changshih for a period of about 30 years, indicates that there is still an abundant deposit. A re- cent estimate of the Felping Geo- logical Survey puts the total de- posits at Tehyen alone at 15,800,000 000 gallons.
