BUILDING HALF NEWS FROM THE LONDON NAVAL

WORLD'S SHIPS

Britain's Share Of New Tonnage

A

Statistics published to-day by Lloyd's Register show that during the quarter ended September 30 i the amount of new merchant construction in hand in British shipyards was 13,742 tons less than the total reported 12 months ago. Compared with the preceding quarter of this "year there is "a decline of 29,767 tons. In spite of this, reduction, the total of 530,554 tons now building here is nearly equal to the aggregate ton- nage under construction in the five leading countries abroad.

Foreign shipyards are building 667,415 tons, or 54,800 tons less than the total reported at the end of last June. Germany leads with 288,340 tons, and is followed by Sweden, 89.000; Holland, 62,645; Japan, 61.305; and Denmark. 54,533.

In all, 1,197,989 tons of new construction are building at home and abroad, the share of British shipyards counting to 44.3 per

cent.

During the quarter ended Sep- tember 30 118,979 tons were begun in Great Britain," an increase of nearly 11,000 tons on the preceding quarter. Abroad. however, there was a big drop-93.459-in new tonnage

begun, compared with the figure for the last quarter.

The returns for the current quarter, ending December 21. ought to show a marked improve- ment in British shipbuilding, for new orders are fairly numerous. and Clyde yards alone have book- ed about 70,000 tons of new con tracts within the past fortnight.
