Nanking Refutes Rumours

the

"New

Demands"

Nanging. Oct. 24. The recent rumours concerning Sino-Japanese relations, which al- lege that are about to be or have already been presented by Japan to the Chinese Government, were strong- ly denied to-day by a spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Speculation that the contents "consist of six or thirteen "De- mands" is entirely without found- ation, declared the spokesman.

the The spokesman said, that Chinese Government has not re-

ceived

any "Demands" from Japan. "In fact, as Chinese and Japanese authorities both at pre- sent exert to improve the exist. ing relations between the 100 countries, it is unlikely that any so-called "New Den. ds" would be presented by Japan to China. It is to be hoped, therefore, the people will take care not to misted by such unfounded rumours, the spokesman conclud-

JAPANESE VIEWS

FINANCE IN CHINA

Dollar Link With Yen?

London, Oct, 24. Financiers do not attach special importance to to-day's drop in the dollar and attribute it su nifex- plained local panic as is frequent- ly the case in the Shanghai maket which is now specially nervous awing to the operations of power- ful speculators.

They are of, opinion, however. that the Chinese Government. Is resolved on a policy of progressive devaluation. Some belleve that the ultimate object is to link the dollar with the yen with a view to enabling China to export on equally favourable terms as Japan, particularly cotton goods, thus making another step towards ac- complishing & Sino-Japanese bloc. The approaching visit of leading Japanese officials to Nanking with a view to all-round settlement of Sino-Japanese problems is watch- ed with the keenest interest,

There is no indication that · Bir Frederick Lelth-Ross has yet specially reported to London. It

is considered likely that he will bring and not send in his report Reuter

Lord Stanhope argued from this the desirability of an immed'ate election in Great Britain to ensure that the country would have a strong and established Govern- ment to deal with the problem to be settled.

RESTORING PEACE

Lord Lothian said he uoped that economic sanctions against Italy would sumee, but confessed he was horrified at the lightness, with which Lord Stanhope said that the Government did not contemplate any appreciable effect from the

League penalties until next year.

"Are we going to walt three, six ΟΙ even twelve months doing nothing but inflicting on the Italian, people economic sanctions? "Peace Dust be restored by the year's end to prevent a worse catastrophe. The League must face the present conditions and de- produce real disarmament," clared Lord Lothian.

The possibility of a League of Nations administration in Ethio- pia was envisaged by Baron Noel- Burton. "We shall have to face the establishment of 3
