ST. STEPHEN'S GIRLS' COLLEGE
Hold Their Annual Speech Day
LADY POLLOCK CONGRATULATES STAFF AND GIRLS
the
Lady Polock who distributed certificates and prizes to the successful candidates of the St. Stephen's Girls' College yester- day said that the secret of the school's successes lay in fact that the Spirit of Fellowship and Service was unse'Rshly adhered to by members of the staff and the girls alike.
The Right Rev. Bishop Hall who spoke at the close of the function associated himself with these remarks and reminded those who had received certificates at the hands of Lady Pol ock to continue in the good work as by so doing they would be spreading sunshine to others.
Bishop Hall went on to say that he was glad to see that the School had already started in another branch of, good work. Some eight deaf and dumb girls had been taken care of by the girls who are conching them in the art of learning.
N. The Bishop concluded by saying that the School had ob- tained the best results in the examination-the best the Schoo" had ever experienced
He congratulated the school a splendid year of work and in the example of service to their fellow "women.

THE REPORT
In presenting her report headmistress said:-
the
For years now & Free School for poor children has been run by voluntary workers from among the girls. This year the scholars num- ber 60, and 14 girls gave up time on half-holidays, to come to teach .he children, who are drawn from these sireet just below us. Од Sundays, another band of volun- teers visit the women and children in the G.C.H.
The Sale of Work last year. run In connection with Fairlea, realised over $2600; the money was given to M.C.L. Funds, and other charl- ties. The girls also had a stall at the Diocesan Bazaar in December.
Owing to the kindness ct very many friends we were able, last November, to hold an Internation- al Exhibition in this Hall, I wish more people could have seen it. It bretin in a small way, but grew to something, quite big and very well worth studying. The Exhibition Itseli was all act of International goodwill. and friendship,,, as the exhibits were lent us by friends of many nationalities,

THE STAFF
There have been many changes on the Staff. We are glad to wel- come Mrs. Li, Miss Yue and Miss Chu, also in the Kindergarten Miss Lo and Miss To both old girls,
Miss Wise has, been to Australia and back again, Miss Baxter hay-
It is a long time, since we had the pleasure of welcoming you here to a Speech Day function, as the be- ginning of the School year has now been changed to Septembre and Speech Days will now be held in the Autumn fästead of the Spring.ing returned from England in time
During the past year our num bers have remained about thi same and the health of the girls has been good.
In the June School Leaving Certificate Examination our per- centage of passes (84%) was good. Out of 19 candidats. 16 passed, of whom 10 were qualified for Matri- culation. Of these. two gained Honours, one. Lai Chung Yue with distinction ir. Algebra and Tr gonometry. One girl gained dis- tinction in Bibical Knowledge SLX have now entered the HK. University, one the University of Shanghal, and three have gone to Lingnam University, Cantou. Of all the
ing our needs has developed and the building of that school is not nec.ssary As you know for years Fairlea and St. Stephen's have shared this building. The time has now cone in our history when It is no longer big enough for us both, so Fairies will soon move to a new building in Kowloon and St. Stephen's will spread over this building. When we have the extra room among other things I should like to see established a Home Economics cr Domestic Scientu Department, where those, whose alents do not lle perhaps in high- er Mathematics and kindred sub- jects, may be trained in more practical ways for the life they will lead which does not necessarily involve a University Career.
It only remains for me to extend our welcome and, warm thanks to Ludy Pollock, who has so kindly come once again to distribute the certificates. We are so glad to have her with us.
