Imagine coolie trouers of floral printed percale, with an orange 01 а sunback top, the addition semi-atted tailored plain white Jacket, and little rolling basque set off by a yellow mulin-disc hat perched perkily forward over one. eye!

Lounging styles have becomié so elegant that the word "pyjama" is now almost anathema. Pyja- mas do exist, of course, but their introduction is rare in connection with beach wear. Shorts-sults replace them, and as you already covered by wrap-to know, are skirts

Not twenty per cent of the ha- bitual users of lipstick know the correct way to apply it. Used crudely it can become, not a beauty aid, but a definite blemish. THE CHOICE OF AUTUMN COLOURS

Range That Will Bewilder

Women

Never have colours been better appreciated and understood than to-day, writes a

correspondent.

The range is so great that it has become dimcult to choose the right shade. Consider the varied tones in blue alone. Our best plan here is to begin with dark- navy and work up to sky, merg- ing in the faded blue-grey sea shade.

Pink has suddenly become fashionable. As with blue, the range seems endless." Coral co- lour is a leader and there are many graduated tones even in coral. The, very palest is easy to wear. The deep shrimp shade is equally trying. A real tone is easier.

WHEN AGE DECIDES

One's age was formerly a guide to the use of a colour. There are still tones for the débutante that should not be infringed upon, such as a gay pink (the best from a Victorian list) or the mid- dle-coral tone referred to, a pale turquoise, a sky blue, apple green lavender-mauve and a primrose yellow. The pastel tones of less colourful trend will admirably be- come the older woman. And we must not forget the popular greys, beiges, browns and hunter s greens for every-day wear.

MORE BLACK AND WHITE All black schi continues to make appeal, even on the hottest day. Nothing is cooler than a soft, thin, black crêpe or stiffened. lace frock, worn with a plain white straw hat. Long white. gloves can make it a party dress."

Whatever colour is worn, should the dress be at all elaborate, the hat chosen will be simple, or vice

versa..

Natural straw hats give a smart air to blue and pink ensembles with shoes of linen or fabric that match the shade of the hat. Big black hats, plain and charmingly poised, look their best with white broderie-anglais frocks, or coral- plak organdi.

Black and white is seen more" than ever for chiffon, crêpe, and Agured linen. Plain black skirts in taffeta or satin are worn with short boleros or swing-back coats of white pique.

The jockey cap berêt of white bengaline or dill satin is 'cheered by a black dy-away vell. The crownless haloes of flowers or feathers continue along with still newer "freak" fashions for late 'summer. Real blossoms are not very satfactory, yet the vague is an insistent one. Brown ostrich "fading into beige, with a dash of yellow composed a charming crownless toque, with a back ban- deau of yellow leaves outlined with ostrich. This was worn with a. simple brown crêpe frock, the neck-line of which was cut in a small round encircled with yellow and brown flowers.

Carnations of fame and red shades are favourites for the tallored, buttonhole as carnations are more lasting flowers.

A red and white crêpe with a loose swagger coat, finished with a red cotton and silk cluster of carnations, looked delightful sur- mounted by a shady white straw hat, trimmed with two carnations resting in the, curve of a brim.

PEARLY TINTS China-rose-pink is successful shot with Heliotrope for the evening. Taffeta always takes on shot effects well. Fabrics of satiny surface and shaded chir- fons are also lovely in this colour. Pearly-grey satins merge into blues and greens. A thick creamy satin backed with gold is good with a brown velvet cape trimmed- with golden fox A halo-cap of gold is held the coiffure by. crossing straps of black velvet.

The hydrangea collection in- spires the colour enthusiast at this season of the year. This in- cludes a wide range of blues and pinks. The blue of the hydran- gea is easier to wear than most of the delphinium, range.

Fabrics can make or mar a co- lour: The rich damasks and vel- vets are ideal for tones taken from field, mountain, woods and gardens, but the thinner summer materials are best in 71ighter shades The modern dyer and designer borrow freely from nature, but to day crude colour- Ings are not tolerated. A colour may be strong and nery, but not crude.
