STRAIGHT FROM THE SHOULDER

(BY NO QUARTER)

To-day is the day of St. Botolph the Martyr, mystery man of the canonical calendar, and patron saint of dromedaries.

4

There are many, and various legends which attempt to describe the early life of St. Botolph, and indeed his beginnings are so wrapped around in the mists of time that it is impossible to decide what, if any, is the truth. One story relates the tale that he was a sergeant of the then marines, and was martyred by a vicious admiral for entching a crab during one of Nero's Regattas. Another records how he was gored by a rhinoceros in the Coli- seum, and a third states that he was a vealslice merchant who was torn in pieces by the Emperor's bassett-hounds.

None of these stories are, in fact, true. St. Botolph "" was a native of Hong Kong, a director of companies; he spent eleven years in prison for suggesting that one firm should pay a dividend, an act which gained him the name of Barmy Botolph. Emerging from his dun- geon, he started 'à vigorous campaign.

The Ealior. (sternly). Young man! I have just been looking at my encyclopedia, and I find that you are lying. St. Botolph was never within 5000 miles of Hong Kong.
