Milan July 28.

1894-

A terrible catastrophe costing at least 32 lives of whom 25 were women occurred in the packing room of the Societa Gèneral Explosive Municione factory at Taino about 12 miles from Lake Maggiore when on Saturday afternoon at about 4 o'clock the whole wing of the ammunition works was blown into the air by a violent explosion.

The factory is one of the largest in the Notch of Italy. The department where the disaster took place was filled with bombs and hand grenades,

The immediate cause of the explosion is still unknown but fortunately this part of the works is segregated from the rest so that only a small part of the total staff of 500, mostly women, were affected. How many workers were engaged on Saturday is uncertain because the number of workers fluctuates according to the quantity of material awaiting despatch, hence it is possible that the number may, turn out to be much larger. At least twenty were seriously injured.

When the first detonation, oc, occurred at 7 o'clock when the curred, all the explosives number- ing thousands of bombs and hand grenades burst with a deafening roar. The top of the building was literally torn off and hurled in all directions. The police and militia hurried to the spot and at once cordoned off the scene..

The inhabitants of the nearby villages and towniets hearing the explosion which shook all the dis- trict and smashed thousands of windows in

houses for several

miles round about, took panic and' hundreds of families began to flee aimlessly.

The military uuthorities at Varese sent to the scene.

ANTI - NAZI RIOT ROYALTY CELEBRATE

IN NEW YORK

Quick Condemnation By The Press

New York, July 28. The New York papers are quick to condemn the riots by Com- munists prior to the sailing of the German Hner Bremen from this port, when abeut a thousand men sang the Internationale and shout- ed *Down with Hitler," bestdes creating disturbances at the pler and in the city after the departure of the vessel.

**Scandalous is the term used by the "New York Times," in com- menting on the incident, while the “Tribune” terms it "disgraceful." Both papers declare that there is no excuse even conceding "that those who took part in this in- seemly mob action were moved by outrages that happened in Naal Germany"

Meanwhile in Washington it generally assumed that an official apology from the United States would be offered if demanded" by Germany.
