The new Air Minister. Sir Philip Cunliffe-Kister, announced in the House of Commons this week that out of 66,000 inquiries, for service under the RAF expan- sion scheme, some 13,000 appli- cants had "prima facle" qualifien- tions and only 700 had so far been enlisted.

The estimated total number of skilled and unskilled men required is about 20,000,

At Victory House, Kingsway, where applications to join the RAP. are received, I was told:

"Although only 700 have so far been accepted, it must be remem- bered that we only want 9000 for the year ending March, 1938. We shall recruit » about. · 800 each month.

"As we have only been open for about three weeks we are really well up the schedule of numbers prepared for."

The simplest examination which the applicant will be required to pass is for the aircraft hand who. is concerned with the unskilled tasks of looking after aircraft in hangars, wheeling them in and out and cleaning them. The skill- ed men also complete this exami- nation.
