ADMIRAL CHEN AND THE REBEL CRUISERS

Friday's Incident Explained

The true story regarding the bombardment by the Nanking cruiser Ning Hat on the rebel cruisers Hai Chi and Hal Shen on Friday evening when the two cruisers were about 50 miles out of Hong Kong was told yesterday when in an interview granted to pressmen, Admiral Chen, the Vice-Minister of Navy, said, “The Hai Chi and Hai Shen were asked to await our arrival from the Noeth but upon our nearing Hong Kong we found that these two cruisers were steaming away in a direction other than to the North. We immediately hoisted the stop engines signal but they took no heed of us and we had no alternative but to fire across their bows as a warning. They immediately turned round and raced for British Waters."

Commodore L Anthony V. Morse, { Adviser on Training to the Chinese Navy who was with Admiral Chen when the interview was asked: "What was the attitude of the Nanking Government toward these vessels ?"

In reply he said that "the whole situation, now we are in British

Chen it amounts to this:

local Chow in waters. It W35 explained that originally the three cruisers came down together to escort the rebel ships up north and when the three ships were nearing Hong Kong the Ning Hai spurted ahead and caught the rebel ships steaming away in another direction. This accounted for their earlier arrival in Hong Kong.

DIFFICULT POSITION

** Is there any truth in the rumour that the Nanking ships were sent down here to safeguard the rebel cruisers?" asked our re- presentative.

"The

position is extremely difficult and has

caused some anxiety in high circles in Nanking. As we are ruled by international law the negotiations between the Central Government and the Can- ton Government are proceeding through the British Authorities, who are acting as intermediaries between them. We have to go to the British authorities in 'connec- tion with everything we do, and all we can do now is to await orders."

In outlining the facts of the case, Mr. J. A Fraser said that three years ago three premises at Fuk Wah street were occupied by the factory. At various dates two of these premises were closed down until at the present moment only No. 104 was kept going.
