The 5 items forming the Joel collection were, of
course, the feature of the sale, and tributed over £66,000 to the day's total, several of them showing a handsome appreciation, on the price given for them on their last 1 appearance in the auction room.

The gem of the collection was Hoppner's portrait of his wife, -illustrated in "The Times" on April 27. This portrait, one of the Anest paintings by Hoppner that has ever appeared in the safe- room, was bought by a member of the Christle family from Cap- tain Hoppner, son of the artist At the for quite a small sum.
