We are on the eve of a great ex- pansion of the Royal Air Force. The Air Ministry has warned its contractors to be ready for large orders.
Fur reasons that have already been stressed it is hoped that we shall see an equal expansion in this country's civil aviation re- sources.
It is hoped, too, that in this ex- pansion sufficient attention will be given to the development of the flying-boat, which has an import- ant arid separate part to play th the years immediately before us.
There is no doubt that we have neglected the flying-boat far too long.
Now the Atlantic beckons to us. It is to-day the paramount ture of all who are concered with civil aviation. Already France and Germany are racing for supremacy in the South Atlantic crossing Portugal also intends to enter the feld, and Italy will not be long "behind her.
The Germans have relied largely on flying-boats to bring their Ber- Jin-South American mail service to its present high efficiency.

IGNORANCE OF MILITARY ETIQUETTE

the Certain military officers o Canton Army have graduated from the Law School, but have not passed through a Military Train- ing College:
cun "take off." The device, em-
lantic service is catapulting.
Land machines carry the mail as far as Bathurst, in British Gambia. A flying-boat takes over, and files to a specially designed ship which is anchored about 100 mile off the coast. Descending alongside the ship, the flying-boat taxis on to A trailing canvas apron and is hauled aboard, refuelled, and then catapulted off for the main stage of its journey to Port Natal, in Brazil.
Another catapult ship, stationed off the South American coast,
spires the problem of take-off on the return journey.
Imperial Airways have given an order for a "composite" machine, which may provide an alternative solition of the take-off difficulty when Britain's transatlantic ser vices begin.
