Reference to methods of reducing cruelty to aninzäis, es-“ pecially those eruet conditions which are now permitted at the landing places and during transport, was made by the President, Mr. Russell, at the annual meeting of the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held at Lane Crawford's yesterday.

Foreign firma in Canton are keenly competing for contracts for various construction and industrial projects envisaged by the Three- Year Plan, which is to turn Kwangtung into a model province. The latest scheme is to bulid a hydro-electric power station at Yung River in North Kwängtung at a cost of about $11,500,000. By damming the river and utilising the water power, electricity can be producea for the use of the whole province" at very low cost.
