THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND

Bishop Hall's Sermon At St.

John's Cathedral

The Rt. Rev. Bishop R. D. Hall chose for his sermon at St. John's Cathedral yesterday, "The Position at the Church of England." He sald:-

The question has beer: raised as to what is involved in membership of the Church. This is an im- portant question and shows a real appreciation that membership of the Church is a responsible matter. "The word membership is the Latin word for limb. Members of the Church are limbs of the Body of Christ, or as our Lord put it they are branches of the vine. If the Church is right at all membership is this close and intimate thing and not merely a casual connec- tion that we may have by paying a subscription to a club.

A discerning churchman once said of the members of the Church of England that they were like Robinson Crusoe's goats, for you will remember Robinson Crusoe

found the goats inside his fence as

wild as those outside.

This is a fair criticism. The

Church of England has not Inalst- ed on as high a standard of con- formity for its members as is re- quired by most ather denomina~ tions. This has given rise to an- other famous story in which a man said that having tried every other urnomination he finally gave up religion" and joined the Church of England.

THE EFFECTS OF THE REFORMATION

It is remarkable how many cen- turies It takes to test out my great changes in human thought and organization. In this century we are feeling acutely the effects the Reformation nearly four

hundred years ago.

We are feeling the effects of the Reformation mere severely than in previous generations since the Tudor 'beriod.

The reason for the question what is involved in membership of the Church is that in religion as in politics Liberalism of any kind is dimcult. Men seem to need some autocracy, something which will save them from the responsibility of making up their own minds and from the confusion that follows when every man is a law unto him. self.

The Reformation represented a swing from one authority to an other. It was a swing from the authority of the Church which finally headed up in the Bishop of Rome who was called the Father or Pope of the Church to the authority of the written word of the Bible.

A BRIDGE CHURCH The tension of the present day is created by the fact that this was a wrong change. The change was, as a matter of fact, never completely made by the Church of England. The Church of England has been called in recent European conferences on Reunion a "Bridge Church, which has, as it were, a foot in both camps.

There is no question

basis is a relationship between God and the individual. The Church is part of God's great activity in time which is not something we make. Like the page following good King Wenceslas, we put our faltering footsteps in Hls. The basis of our position is that we do not belleve God wishes men to be servants to an authority which is implacable but friends that give to Him a glad obedience of sons, "

SAINTS AND SINNERS

There are two other extreme types of Church organization in which again the Church of Eng- land takes a middle position. There is the Sect type of Church and the Pastoral. The Sect type tends to be a small group of people requiring of close fellowship and a very high standard of conduct.

England has always taker the middle position. I don't pretend that we have ever thought it out. The Church of England as such has no central mind at any given time. It moves forward rather by the inspiration of leadership first of one and then of another individual OF group who are aeized with power by the Spirit of God, so it keeps within the same fellowship those whose view is entirely that of the Sect type of Church" and those whose view is that of the Pastoral type.
