Berlin, May 23 The second of a series of cases against members of the Catholic religious orders for breaches of the foreign exchange regulations ended on Wednesday before the locul court here with Sister Neophyta the 56-year-old Mother Superior of Cologne convent being sentenced to five years penal servitude and fined 521,000 marks and deprived
of her civil rights for a period of five years. The second defendant, the 57-year-old Sister Englatia, was sentenced to ten months' imprison- The court. ment for complicity. moreover, ardered the sum of 180,- 000 marks for which the convent'ts rendered liable to be confiscated. Sister Neophyta, who admitted her guilt had taken German cur- rency to the total amount of 200,000, marks across the Dutch border concealed under her nun's clothing and had used these funds for the repurchase of bonds for her Order held abroad, thereby taking advan- tage of the low rate of exchange. Her co-defendant. Sister Englutia. who had knowledge of these transactions did nothing to prevent them.
