Closing Day At The Yacht Club
MR. A. L. SHIELDS REVIEWS YEAR'S
SAILING ACTIVITIES
"Yet another racing season has drawh" to close, and, in spite of having started earlier and tackled a very, full program- » me I do not think that many of us feel that we are stale and want a rest,” said Mr. A. L. Shields, the Commodore of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club on Saturday on the occasion of the "clos- ing day" of the Club, which was attended by a fairly large ga-
thering.
A special Ladies' and Visitors' race and a Whalers' Race 'were 's sailed for the occasion, and, favoured with deal weather condi- tions, a most enjoyable afternoon was spent
The results of the rates were as follows:-

"1" "Y" and "G" Classes -1, Sirius (Mrs. Cooper): 2 Widgeon (Miss Bilderbeck)...

COMMODORE'S SPEECH

-
Addressing the gathering. Mr. A
Shields said: "Yet another racing season has drawn to a close. and, in spite of having started earlier and tackled a very full Programme I do not imagine that many of us feel, that we are stale and want a rest.
"In addition" to the usual Club races on Saturdays, matches on Sundays and ladies' races on Mon- days, we have had a very success- ful series of Wednesday races for both sexes, as quite a number of members and subscribers bave been able to get away to sail in mid-week,
were
Prizes for the Wednesday series kindly presented by Mrs. Rouse, Major 'Griffin and Colonel Bilderbeck, to whom we offer our thanks for their generosity."
The classic In this series is the Illingworth Cup race. which this year was round Single Island. Owing to light winds the race was somewhat disappointing.
The Club and service salling matches have been as popular as ever, the Army beating both the Club and the Navy and the Club beating the Navy.
"Great Britain 'beat ́Scandinavia- for the Scandinavian CLD on a very hard day. The subscribers beat the members, and the high standard of yachtsmanship which we have always found amongst our subscribers is being very well maintained.
"The ladies this year have beet rather unlucky with the weather, either no wind or too much on a number ut occasions.
The Macao Race "The Macao race was a popu- lar as ever, and Mr. Cook is to be congratulated on winning it and also on the successs of Sea Lark's new rig.
"Only one
protest has been heard, while a number of yachts have withdrawn from races due "to error of judgment. Many of us have possibly been a little too in- dulgent in letting unwitting of- fenders get away with it, and, al- though the salling: Committee do not like protests, I feel
they should be made when errors of judgment occur or the rules are misinterpreted.
Appreciation
