THE SHIPPING BUSINESS

Still A Depressed Industry

ADDRESSED AS FOLLOWS:

"In spite of the improvement in British trade and the slight re-

international covery in

trade. shipping remains one of the de- pressed industries of the world. The growth of trade barriers, in cluding subsidies for building and running ships, has at last forced Great Britain to act in self- defence."

The Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom opens with these striking words the report. which was submitted to the an nual meeting of the Chamber in London.

There was between June, 1931, and June, 1934, a réduction of 4,500,000 gross tons in world ton- nage, but tonnage in commission had been increased by 3,000,000 tons, the amount of laid-up ton- nage, having been reduced from 14,500,000 gross tone in Junë, 1932, to 7,000,000 gross tons to-day.
