DEAF MUTES

Taught To Speak

An account of remarkable work being done to teach deaf-muts bables to hear and speak was given by Mr. Philip Frankiin, Otologiat to the Research Clinic for Deal Mutes, and Infants Hospital, Vin- cent-square, London, S. W., in a recent issued of the "Lancet."

The article is entitled "The Deat Mute a Plea for Early Treat- ment," and describes what is really the Arst attempt to train deaf- mute babies to speak,

Under the present law, the par- ent of dear child is compelled to send the child to a special school from the age of..seven, though a child may be admitted from the age of two.

Experts think that valuable ear- ly years of training are thus lost. and that there is in this delay more danger to deaf and dumb chlidren than to any other type of defective child..

"The potentialities of the young 'deaf-mute, both as regards speech and education are considerable," writes Mr. Franklin, and when use is made of them by means of deat alds and other methods of open- ing the avenues of approach to the child's mind, the energy, enthu- alasin and thirst for knowledge shown is often very striking."

Sound and Speech

One of the methods used," and described in the Lancet, is to stimulate the finger-tips by a vibrating plate controlled by an electric current. Records show that the response to vibrations through the ears or through the Anger-tips is identical

The normal child and the deaf child depend upon imitation for speech, but for the deaf child au; dible, suggestion is impossible. The 'dẹat child can only imitate what his eye sees or his hand feels. He Is taught to recognise sound by touch the primitive sense hearing.
