Able Amazon Sets New Mile Record

Upsets In First Extra Meeting

COSSACK'S BEAUTY

PAYS $238.90

Able Amazon again proved herself to be the best Australian pony in the Colony by creating a new record for the mile at the First Extra. Race Meeting on Saturday when in the Moonie. Ponds Handicap she finished, the distance in 1.46.3 which beat by one second the previous best mark set up by Nell Gwyn and Gold Morning.

The meeting was featured by several upsets, the biggest of which was caused by Cossack's Beauty when it won the Hong Kong Handicap "A" Division from a field of seven starters which included such favourites as Soldier of Britain and King's Jus- tice Incidentally, it returned the highest dividend of the day $238.90.

The Daily Double, however, yielded the comparatively poor dividend of $33.60.

"Corn and Hay" Stakes There was an even start in this race which was won by Cavalcade, the favourite, from a field of this

Philanderer, which came second, took the lead from the start, followed closely by young Chap.

Cavalcade was then lying fourth but in the stretch home it responded splendidly to the efforts of its jockey, Mr. Pih, for it gave a brilliant spurt to catch up the leader. Philanderer, to win by a short head. Meanwhile Young Chap was also coming up strongly but its efforts were a bit too late, finishing a neck behind Philan- derer.

The two last named ponies took the lead together from the start and this position remained for practically three-quarters of the distance.. In the last quarter. Sol- dier of Britain was seen to be dropping, but King's Justice was still leading, and it was at thought that this pony would win. Meanwhile Ribble was also finishing strongly, but King's Justice just managed to beat it by a head.

Hetman made a great effort to

catch up. Although it succeeded to reduce the lead, the distance proved too much for this pony, and Oak Bay went on to win by three lengths. Great Hall was third, many lengths behind.

Randwick Flate

Hong Kong Handicap "B" Division High Honour won this race from a field of nine starters.. The Tiger, which finished second, led from the start but after going a short distance, it was caught up by What a Chance and Soldier of China, At the Black Rock, What a Chance dropped behind, thus allowing Sol- dier of China, The Tiger and High Honour to catch it up. In the last quarter The Tiger was seen to be. leading, but near the finishing post it was caught up by High Honour who won by a head. Meanwhile Jungle Jim had spurted past Sol- dier of China to finish third, two lengths behind the Tiger.
